Lucky Day - Another Fantastic Chuck Tingle Release!
One day, a horrifying catastrophe hits the world. Vera lives through it but not without losing family and friends. This disaster is called the Low Probability Event, but Vera, who was once a professor of statistics, is not interested. She is grieving, suicidal, and just trying to make it through the day. But when a government agent shows up at her door one day, asking her to help him investigate a casino that could potentially be behind all of this, Vera decides to take a chance.
Lucky Day by Chuck Tingle hits shelves August 12th.
“The problem is not just how macabre the scene is, but how astronomically unlikely.”
Here’s what I loved:
Vera, our lead, is an incredibly complex individual who is battling with survivor’s guilt, post traumatic stress, and depression. She spends her days thinking of committing suicide, but never quite committing. I think a lot of us can relate to Vera in many ways, and the way Tingle handles depressive and suicidal thoughts is really honest and written with a lot of care. She’s a great character to spend time with as she grows and begins to heal, but also as she learns to live in this unpredictable world.
Layne, the LPEC agent, was my favourite for most of the story. His way of seeing the world and ‘seizing the day’ was so hilarious in parts. The banter between Vera and Layne was fantastic, and as Vera begins to open up more to Layne, you are really rooting for their friendship.
As the twists and turns are revealed, there were a few that really hit me hard. This is such a clever story with so many layers and it’s easy to find yourself completely wrapped up in it.
I also really enjoyed the absolute bat shit insane probability events. Every time you think it’s reached peak crazy-ness, a monkey with a typewriter shows up. And despite the carnage left in its wake, they are a fascinating read.
“I’m not sure the odds matter anymore.”
Overall, Lucky Day is a fast paced read with a lot to say, and its messages are handled delicately and lovingly. Chuck Tingle is such a horror darling, and every book he releases is well worth the read. A big thank you to Tor Nightfire for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review.
