Dominoes - Not a Book for Children

June 18, 2024 by Samantha in Spooky Reads

I am not sure I can express my utter excitement at getting this Little Horror Book (remember the gentle "Little Golden Books" of yore?) into my hands. I sat and stared at the cover for several minutes, taking in the menacing details and trying to imagine what might lie within its pages. Then I flipped it open and felt giddy at the “This Little Horror Book Belongs to” page that I always so eagerly scratched my name into when I was a kid. You can bet I did the very same here.

Turning the page starts a deadly chain of events punctuated with roman numerals, each containing a portent of doom, each a domino falling into its final resting place. I read this book twice, relishing all of the morbid illustrations and flicking my mind's tongue over every word. My temperature rose as the apocalypse approached ever-steadily. This tiny book with its skull accents is the polar opposite of a Little Golden Book. Looking at it turned me into a child, reading it ruined that child, and then I returned to my adult self and thought whooo-eee! This sickly sweet book plays a dangerous game.
