Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke - Unforgettable, Modern, Queer Horror

May 27, 2021 by Samantha in Spooky Reads

Eric LaRocca was kind enough to send me an ARC in exchange for a review.

I picked this up and didn't put it down until I was finished. It read like a queer and vicious installment of Night Gallery, if Night Gallery was allowed to show episodes with characters in the Master/Slave dynamic.

The formatting here is unique and modern with exchanges happening online via e-mail and Instant Messenger. The Author's note threw me for a loop and I spent a good ten minutes researching the characters of Zoe and Agnes to see if they were real people before continuing. That really added to the 'fun' of this novella for me. As I read on, I simply could not put it down. I could not have imagined that such a benign start could turn so devastatingly corrupt.

I was left with the sense that I avoided some very real dangers in my more innocent years of exploring the internet for connections; that the loneliness people feel can drive them to do extreme things to reach for that connection. Being made aware of that is both sad and frightening. Every time we reach out for a new connection, there is always a chance that we may pick up something perilous that can't be shook off.

I definitely recommend you read this when it becomes available to all on June 1st, 2021. It won't take you long, and it won't be shook off.
