The Babysitter: Killer Queen - A Bloody Fun Good Time

September 30, 2020 by Mike in Horror Movie Reviews

Mike:

Hearing that there was a sequel to The Babysitter coming soon to Netflix I was sold, no need to even watch a trailer, I was ready. And I’m happy to report that the movie is every bit as good as I was hoping for.

Director McG (The Babysitter, Charlie’s Angels 2003), gives us a sequel that lives up to the original. Picking up two years after the events of the first movie, Cole (Judah Lewis- Summer of 84) has been traumatized from his survival of being nearly sacrificed to the devil by a cult of hot dumb devil worshipers. Nobody believes him, not even his best friend Melanie (Emily Allen Lynd-Doctor Sleep). He’s a social pariah, but Melanie tries to help him out by inviting him out to the lake, which turns out to be…

…a trap, as she and her friends are in the same cult, and are trying to complete the ritual that began in the first movie. It’s up to Cole, and the new weird girl at school Phoebe (Jenna Ortega- Insidious Chapter 3) to survive the night and stop the cult, as well as the returned to life cult from the first movie (Robbie Ammell, Bella Thorne, Hana Mae Lee, Andrew Bachelor) who are back as well to finish the job they didn’t get done the first time around.

It’s really hard to do a good sequel in any genre, but especially, I think, in horror. McG and his people had a challenge ahead of them but they pulled it off. It’s an ultra violent, bloody good time, with a killer soundtrack. Though this brings up my one nitpick about the movie, it’s clearly made by people of my age group and Gen X, as kids today are just not getting down to Das EFX and Young MC and making out to Foreigner. That just doesn’t happen.

If you thought the first one was dumb, yeah you’re really not going to like this one, but if you love this type of stuff it will likely make your favorites of the year list. It plays like a hybrid of a Phil Lord and Chris Miller comedy with the stylish action violence of an Edgar Wright movie. In short, it’s one fantastically fun movie, which is really what we need this year.

Charlotte:

I had to jump in here and add to the review because holy shit you guys I love this movie. Firstly, I have not laughed out loud that much watching a movie in a long time. “….I have a penis” “I know".” This series has completely nailed the horror comedy sub-genre.

I think what makes this movie so special is that it somehow took the charm and ridiculousness of the first flick and amped it up for the sequel. There’s more over the top gore and kill scenes, there’s more comedy, and way more story. What I really enjoy though is that this movie utilizes every character on screen to perfection. All the way from our lead Cole down to the police officer that tells the parents, “if he’s not back by tonight I’ll call ICE…ICE…BABY.” Every second of this movie is filled with fun.

And how fucking great is Phoebe? Jenna Ortega completely knocked this role out of the park. Which isn’t easy considering everyone came to play in this flick.

Director, McG, has this amazing way of taking modern day teenagers and their lives and turning into a realistic yet also over the top view of 2020 high school life. Watching as a 31 year old, this version is basically how I assume highschool is now for kids.

While not diving too far into spoiler territory, I will say that the twists and turns this movie take are pretty insane but by the end it’s actually quite emotional. It’s a pretty solid message overall. We spend our teens being misunderstood by our parents, not being taken seriously, and not being believed. And in this case, none of the adults in Cole’s life believe the traumatic experiences he’s been through. But by the end there’s this funny yet emotional moment when his Dad believes him. And all Cole can do is stare in shock and keep repeating, “you believe me?”. And I’m not saying parents should believe everything their teens say, we all learned to lie impeccably at that age, but when something serious is happening - believing first and then looking into the truth second is really the most important and supportive you can be.

So, yeah, I agree with Mike - this movie is a fucking great time. An excellent sequel that fans of the first film will love. And if you didn’t like the first flick, then don’t watch this one. I’m seeing so many 1 star and 2 star reviews, “I hated the first so I watched this one and it sucked too.” You are the worst. Go sit down.

Long reign Killer Queen Bee!

Two years after defeating a satanic cult led by his babysitter Bee, Cole's trying to forget his past and focus on surviving high school. But when old enemies...
