You know what honestly is my favorite part of conventions? The vendors. Finding so many amazing pieces of art, clothing, keychains, pins…you mention it. And then buying everything and being very pleased with yourself. This year at Fan Expo Vancouver I was scrolling through IG beforehand to see if there were any vendors I wanted to meet. Darah and The Creatures had posted showing off some of their headbands and I FREAKED. I HAD to get some!

At the convention I quickly found their booth and wow was their stuff amazing!? I ended up choosing a donut hairband as donuts are my one true food love. And both women at the booth were incredibly friendly and so much fun!

We recently got a chance to chat back and forth so I could set up this spotlight of their incredible products and show you how cool these two women are!

How long have you been creating for Darah and The Creatures? How did it all begin?

Katie and I began collaborating a little before October of 2018. I had moved to Vancouver at the end of 2017 and had difficulty making a name for myself and finding my way here. I met Katie through my husband, who is good friends with hers. We realized we had so much in common (including a love for horror, sewing and tons of enthusiasm to share) we just had to do something about it. We both had separate personal projects (Katie with @hungry_creature_boutique and myself with @_missdarah) that we merged to birth Darah & The Creatures. Now we operate as a collective with Katie and I driving the machine and our partners supporting us with photography/film, video and editing.

Where do you gather your inspirations from to create these awesome products?

We both share a mutual love for all things cute and kitschy, and wanted to see more of it in the world. We're both film buffs and big ol’ nerds in general, so it came naturally when deciding what to create for Darah & The Creatures.

You have a wide range of products from dresses to pouches, what are your favorite to make?

Working with my hands has been a joy regardless of what I make! Jewelry is proving to be an exciting experiment, as eye catching earrings are what I'm all about personally.

And what haven't you made yet that you really want to create?

We have had many requests for geeky ties/tie-it yourself bowties (as opposed to the instant bowties we currently have) and pocket squares, that would be our next product to develop for sure. Adding more items to our home ware offerings would be great too. Being new and working craft fairs, it's great to be able to connect with folks and see what works and where the gaps in the market are and adjust our products for folks who love our stuff!

I love your products, and can see the variety of influences including Hocus Pocus and Nightmare Before Christmas. What are your favorite horror films?
A whole gamut of films! Horror comedies like Tucker & Dale Vs Evil and Happy Death Day, and sometimes the odd gothic romantic horror films like Dracula, Sleepy Hollow and Crimson Peak. Coming from Asia though I have a soft spot for Asian horror films- 4Bia, Shutter, The Eye, May the Devil Take You, Jangan Pandang Belakang, Ju-on, One Missed Call, Dark Water…the list could go on.
