Top 5 Good Witches

October 10, 2018 by Charlotte Hollingsworth in Top Tens

It’s October! And all month long, Horror Bound is doing top 5 lists to keep you in the holiday spirit. This week’s list is mostly inspired by my recent re-read of Harry Potter and my deep obsession of witches. So, without further ado -

TOP 5 GOOD WITCHES

NUMBER FIVE – Willow Rosenberg

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a big part in all of our lives when we were growing up in the early 2000’s. And a lot of girls idolized Willow, myself included. A totally dorky, sweet, great friend who turns into a super powerful fucking witch.

Obviously, she goes dark side for awhile, BUT ultimately, she is good.

Willow is super intelligent, she was a member of the science, math and computer club in high school. But she also is loyal, and a founder of the Scooby Gang. She spends so many seasons being the moral high ground. She’s constantly battling against her friends reminding them there’s good in the world and being the little angel on their shoulders reminding them to do the right thing.

Even when she goes dark side and is struggling to pull herself back, she still does it for the love of her life and for her friends.

“And I just realized that that’s what I want to do. Fight evil, help people. I mean, I think it’s worth doing. And I don’t think you do it because you have to. It’s a good fight, Buffy, and I want in.”

NUMBER FOUR – Sabrina Spellman

So, before we jump into the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, I’m putting her on my good witch list. And the Sabrina I’m referring to is the old TV show version, live action and cartoon. She originally popped up in the Archie comics and then we got an awesome 90’s move and TV show.

Why is Sabrina a good witch? Because she’s a teenager who gets into a lot of shit, but always manages to learn a lesson in the end. Being a teenager sucks, and being an awkward half witch teenager with sometimes uncontrollable powers sucks even more. And she has a cat that is suuuuper shady towards her.

But after all the shit Sabrina goes through, she always comes out on top. And sure, when she’s a teenager she causes a lot of problems. But by the time she gets to college she really figures out how to be a good witch. She’s constantly turning down hair brained schemes from her friends and cleaning up everyone’s messes.

Oh, and Sabrina and Harvey are total endgame. Their soul stones decided so!

NUMBER THREE – Hermione Granger

Hermione Granger is EVERYTHING. She’s intelligent, she’s kindhearted, she’s brave, she’s supportive, she’s loyal. She’s literally the perfect definition of Gryffindor.

Hermione is of course Harry and Ron’s best friend, and eventually Ron’s girlfriend (and wife down the line). Without Hermione, basically none of these books would’ve happened. The Harry Potter series is basically Hermione saving his ass every chapter.

Not only is Hermione a star pupil throughout her schooling career, after school Hermione joins the Ministry of Magic and then becomes the goddamn Minister for Magic. Because she’s perfect.

Hermione is an extremely talented witch who would make a great role model for anyone.

NUMBER TWO – Sally Owens

Practical Magic is a truly wonderful film that will make your heart very full. It’s about two sisters in a family of witches growing up in this crazy world. They’re also cursed! Sally is one of the main characters who was born on Halloween. After her parents died, her and her sister Gillian moved in with their aunts, Bridget and Francis.

Sally is a descendant of a long and powerful line of witches but as she gets older she doesn’t want anything to do with it. But when Sally meets the love her life (IN ONE OF THE MOST ROMANTIC SCENES EVER) and they get married and have babies, her husband meets a tragic early end. This is due to the curse surrounding the women in the family.

Why is she amazing? Because family is everything to her. When her sister shows up on her doorstep escaping from an abusive relationship, Sally drops everything and helps her. She loves her kids and does everything to protect them. She’s also incredibly intelligent and incredibly powerful as a witch.

She’s just *sigh* perfect.

NUMBER ONE - Professor McGonagall

I mean….she might be the ultimate good witch. McGonagall is a teacher (and later on, Headmistress) of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter series. Full name is Minerva McGonagall and she is a TOTAL BAD ASS. She’s a registered Animagus and can turn into a cat on whim. She’s a Gryffindor and is the Head of House for them as well.

She’s always stood up for what was good. She was a member of the Order of the Phoenix and an outspoken protester of Voldemort and his Death Eaters.

McGonagall is a tough teacher but cares deeply about her students. She’s also a total HBIC and has some great moments in the book series that prove she don’t give NO FUCKS.

Not only did she stand up to Voldemort, she also stood up to Snape and Umbridge.

Ugh, she’s just the best.

Goals.
